Billie Mckay is a 26 year-old who grew up on a dairy farm in Bowraville on the mid north coast
of NSW. Billie was a keen cook from a very young age, always offering to cook dinner for her
family while the cows were being milked. Her passion for food took her into the hospitality
sector, working as a waitress and then moving into restaurant management, working in
restaurants in Newcastle, Byron Bay and Ballina. Always interested in what was going on in
the kitchens, she spent all of her spare time cooking at home from making celebration cakes to
catering family occasions.
After a lot of encouragement from partner Haydn, Billie sent off an application to MasterChef
Australia season 7, and while the experience was testing, she counts it as a life changing
experience and one of the best times of her life, especially the challenges. The pressure of
cooking on a time limit was something Billie loved.
After MasterChef, Billie immediately moved to England to take up an offer to work in Heston Blumenthal’s Bray restaurant, The Fat Duck. She spent a year in England, moving back to Australia after travelling Europe with Haydn for 3 months sampling different foods of the world.
Billie is currently working on the family dairy farm; something she says is hugely rewarding and real. Her passion for food and cooking continues with ideas and ventures in the pipeline, focusing on food that is real, tells a story and most importantly makes people feel good.
